“The First United Methodist Church Of Shelton is a welcoming family of God committed to becoming more and more like Jesus Christ.”
So begins our most recent Welcoming Statement, which also happens to offer a great encapsulation of our ministry. One of the first things you will notice upon arriving on Sunday morning is that we are a welcoming congregation. Everyone is ready to offer their hand, or give a warm smile. But more important than just a cozy feeling our welcome extends beyond easy comforts to include people of every age, ethnicity, and race, sexual orientation and gender identity, marital status, socio-economic situation, and physical/mental ability. On any given week you may not see us welcome persons that fit all of these descriptions, but we stand ready to.
At this stage in our congregation’s life, we are largely a congregation of older adults, but certainly not exclusively so. We welcome and are actively seeing younger folk to journey with us and help us forge the next stage of our congregation’s life.
As the second half of the quote above states, all our work aims to help all of us “become more and more like Jesus Christ.” We accomplish this through our worship but also through occasional classes and workshops, mission work, and opportunities to serve. Our hope is that in meeting and being in ministry with us, one might come to see at least a reflection of Christ in all we do.
We are home to organizations such as:
- Boy Scout, Cub Scout,
